Start role-based Marketing Cloud Next training before the licence
Salesforce's role-based plan for the MCE to Marketing Cloud Next move: who trains first, which Trailhead modules, and why AI waits until phase three.
Marketing Cloud Next is built natively on the Salesforce platform, so the connectors and hand-built processes that joined Marketing Cloud Engagement to the other clouds are no longer needed, and marketers get platform tools such as Flow Builder directly. Salesforce's own guidance is that this changes who needs to know what: Marketing Cloud, Data 360 and CRM product owners each have to learn the others' territory, and the teams that transition most smoothly are the ones that start training before they hold a Marketing Cloud Next licence.

Who this applies to
- Marketing teams on Marketing Cloud Engagement that have bought, or plan to buy, Marketing Cloud Next
- Edition: not stated in the source. The plan references a "Marketing Cloud Advanced" Trailmix in phase two, but does not say the training depends on Advanced or Growth
- No product permissions are needed for phase one. It is Trailhead self-study plus, at most, two instructor-led courses per six-month phase
Why it matters
The source is blunt that today's siloed team structures will not work once marketing, Data 360 and CRM share one platform. More people will need Data 360 access to avoid bottlenecks in the campaign process, and CRM admins will need to extend Flows for marketing without breaking CRM guardrails. Training after go-live means learning the platform and re-organising the team at the same time.
Try it
- Name the product owners and admins for Marketing Cloud, Data 360 and CRM. They are affected first and get an accelerated track.
- Sort the rest of the marketing team into three cohorts: Ops, Analysts and Users; Strategists; Architects and Developers.
- Phase one, before the licence: everyone completes the shared foundations - MC Next Basics, Discover Salesforce Data 360 Fundamentals (SDC101) and Flow Builder Concepts.
- Add the admin tracks on top. Marketing Cloud admins: MC Next Setup: Quick Look, Build a Data Strategy for Data 360, Get Started with Record-Triggered Flows (ADX009). Data 360 admins: the Data Stream Fundamentals and Data Quality & Validation superbadges. CRM admins: ADX009 plus Automate No-Code Solutions Using Flow (ADX301).
- Phase two: move to hands-on work - the Marketing Cloud Advanced Trailmix, the Flow Administration and Screen Flow Fundamentals superbadges, Design & Build Effective Solutions with Data 360 (SDC301) for Data 360 admins, and the Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist certification for ops and strategists.
- Phase three: turn the learning into certifications (MC Next Consultant, Data 360 Consultant, Platform Administrator) and only now add the Agentforce modules MOC001 and MOC003.
- Cap instructor-led training at two courses per six-month phase. If your organisation has a Signature Success Plan, the courses and workshops are included.
- Put new hires through instructor-led MKT101 and MKT201 during onboarding, then drop them into the track for their role.
Example use case
A retail marketing team of eight on Marketing Cloud Engagement expects a Marketing Cloud Next licence next financial year. The two campaign builders and the analyst take the Ops, Analysts and Users track, the brand lead takes the Strategist track, and the one integration developer takes the Architects and Developers track. The Marketing Cloud admin starts on Data 360 fundamentals now, because segmentation in Marketing Cloud Next lives there, so that by the time the licence arrives the audience model is already understood rather than being discovered in the first campaign.
Prerequisites, limitations and risks
- Trailhead access for every person on the plan. Most of the plan is self-guided Trailhead content
- Time: the source frames each phase as roughly six months and warns that day-to-day pressure makes training hard to protect
- The plan is a Salesforce consultant's recommended framework, not a product prerequisite. Nothing in Marketing Cloud Next is gated on completing it
- Instructor-led courses are free only with a Signature Success Plan, per the source. Pricing without that plan is unverified
- Edition-specific behaviour (Advanced versus Growth) is not covered by the source. Verify feature availability in your own org before planning training around a specific capability
Documented behaviour above comes from the sources listed below. Availability varies by edition, SKU and region - confirm entitlements in your own org before you rely on a feature.
